At the BBB 24 while talking to Isabelle in the leader's room, Davi Brito reflected on racism and how black people are seen differently by society.
The Bahian was talking about the opportunity to graduate in medicine when he leaves the reality show and said: “A young man like us, who is black and poor, we didn't have money. He was wearing something like that and people were already looking at him. It's difficult to reach a top like this here. As much as they say that the public likes you, we know that racism exists.”
“Racism exists. There are people, yes, who still today have this way of looking differently at people who are black, who don't have many conditions. It’s complicated,” added Davi.
The Bahian then narrated a case of racism he witnessed in Salvador, while exercising on the street at night.
“There was a boy, he was behind me. I walked and there were two girls in front of me. Two girls in front of me and the guy behind me, and he was walking normally. They started looking back, grabbed the bag and hid the bag. I looked like this, I was normal, I was calm, and I even stopped. I stopped walking very fast so they wouldn’t think I was behind them, and they started to speed up,” said the app driver.
“At that moment, the boy who was coming behind started crying. I looked back and saw him crying. So I said, 'Good evening, did something happen to you?', and he said: 'No, the girls ran away'. And I said, 'Did you run away? Like this?'. But I had already realized the situation,” he explained.
“And he said: 'No, they thought I was going to rob them. I'm not a burglar, no, I'm just here walking my walk. Is this because of my color? Because of the clothes I'm wearing? Why can't I afford to buy nice clothes? Cut my hair, look more tidy, smell good and have a gold watch on my arm?'. Then, wow, that hurt me. Sometimes just because of our color we are judged. And racism exists! And that touched me a lot”, Davi told his friend.
Davi recounts once witnessing a case of racism and how it touched him in a profound way.
