After opening the doors of the house and presenting all the intimacy that makes up the family, Gilberto Gil packed his bags to travel to Europe and Africa with his wife Flora, children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter and family. The series “Viajando Com Os Gil”, which is a continuation of the production “Em Casa Com Os Gil”, premieres on June 30 on Prime Video.
In six episodes, signed by filmmaker Andrucha Waddington, with a script by Hermano Vianna and Sebastian Gadea, fans will closely follow the moments on and off the stage of the singer’s family, during the international tour that celebrated his 80 years of life.
The production also shows the routine and backstage of the biggest musical family in the country, which traveled to 10 countries with around 40 people, including 7 children, 12 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.
In an interview with CNN Brazil Gilberto Gil spoke about the experience of documenting the entire journey and stated that, despite being used to a full house, traveling with so many people also had its perrengues.
The singer confessed, however, that taking the house to the road made the perrengues lessen and reactions more controlled – mainly due to the fact that everything was being recorded.
“The speeches and gestures are more moderate, even more so knowing that the cameras are there recording everything”, he assumed.
Change of plans
Gil says that the tour provided a revisit to known places, which caused a certain comfort, at the same time that it had many surprises, like Casablanca, in Morocco, where he had never been before.
“It was a mix of accommodation with the past of touring and everything that has already been done with new surprises, news here and there”, he recalls.
Among the surprises experienced in more than a month of travel, Flora Gil, the singer’s wife, says that the family’s equipment disappeared during the trip, when they left Morocco for a presentation in Berlin, the German capital. At the time, other equipment was rented by the team to fulfill the agenda in the city.
meeting of generations
The union of generations on stage and in audiences was another highlight of the production “Viajando Com Os Gil”, which demonstrates the passage of time and the junction between the old and the new. Gil says he is already used to moving from youth to maturity.
“Now I’m already an old man, and there’s the accommodation of that: conformity, according to age”, he says.
Defining moments
In addition to the emotion of being with the family to celebrate 80 years of life, the artist remembers important moments that were recorded by the cameras.
“I sometimes have difficulty highlighting memory. There were many exciting moments. The show in Geneva was very interesting, it was an open place, it was during the day and with many Brazilians. We could see the faces of everyone in the audience and the excitement”, he recalls.
Offstage, another moment highlighted by Flora and documented by the series was Maria Gil’s marriage to the Italian Giacomo Pirazolli.
“We, the People” in Brazil
After passing through international stages, it was the family’s turn to bring the tour “Nós, A Gente” to five Brazilian capitals. The singer reveals that the main discussion between Gil was deciding what would remain on the tour and what would be rethought for performances in national territory.
For him, the expectation is that the audiences in Brazil will continue what was seen in Europe, where the audiences were already composed mostly of Brazilians.
“The Brazilian part was numerous, warm, dominant. They set the tone for the general behavior of the show, sang, got the Europeans to sing and dance. I think that here in Brazil this will happen again”, she says.
On CNN, Flora Gil assumes that the family is not as calm as the patriarch. “I think that for Gil it is easier, but I think that for the family, who are following along, it is different, because when they were on stage in Barcelona, for example, they didn’t have so many acquaintances in the audience. Here in Brazil, it’s not just fans, it’s family members, girlfriends, neighbors, building manager, friend… So, for them, the presentation is different. For the gang, Brazil is more tense”, she says.
goodbye to the stages
About to turn 81, the immortal Gilberto Gil reveals that he is thinking of stopping, but that there is no set date for saying goodbye to the stage.
“There will come a time when I will stop anyway. The issue of physical exhaustion, mental exhaustion too, but as long as there is gas… As long as there is bamboo, there is an arrow”, she said.
“As long as you have corn, you have popcorn”, added Flora.
As long as you have Gil you will have Gil.
