On CNN, Iran’s minister denies rape allegation at Revolutionary Guard prison

The death of young Mahsa Amini in September last year sparked a wave of protests across Iran. The woman, who was 22 at the time, was detained by the morality police for improperly wearing the Islamic headscarf, which is mandatory in the country.

Amidst the protests, the violent repression of the Iranian government left dead, injured and thousands of prisoners. In the first two months of demonstrations, at least 326 people died. According to the United Nations (UN), more than 14,000 people were arrested.

A CNN been to Iran, heard reports from local people, including a cleric, and confirmed the story of a female protester who was detained and held in a Revolutionary Guards facility for over a month, where she was raped by three different men.

Videos that started to circulate on social media allegedly also showed Iranian security forces sexually assaulting female protesters in the streets.

the anchor of CNN Christiane Amanpour interviewed Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and questioned him about allegations of torture and sexual abuse against arrested protesters.

“Regarding the Iranian woman you mentioned, I cannot confirm. There have been so many baseless claims made on social media and in the media. We saw some of the reports from the CNN that are targeted and false,” said the minister.

Hossein also stated that the Supreme Leader of Iran has granted amnesty, and that all demonstrators who were arrested during the protests have been released.
