On CNN Profit #07: I wanted to sell fancy pie and I became the queen of spoon brigadier, says Carole Crema

Finding your biggest passion trying something you’ve never done before isn’t for everyone, but that’s how one of Brazil’s top bakers found her gift. Carole Crema is celebrating 20 years of career and carries nothing less than the invention of the spoon brigadier on her resume. Or, as she likes to say, the idea of ​​marketing it, as it has always been something present in the life of Brazilians.

As a guest on the seventh episode of CNN In Profit podcast, CNN Brasil Soft project, the businesswoman gave tips for those who are starting to undertake and told what were the main mistakes she made in her beginnings.

In the conversation led by Leandro Munhós, Carole also says the secret of the recipe for the perfect brigadeiro.

Despite Carole’s modesty in saying that she was not the one who invented the spoon brigadeiro, the confectioner was the first to market the sweet – in addition to having its registration in Brazil.

The “invention” happened by chance. According to the chef, at the beginning of her career, she had difficulty getting the recipe for brigadeiro (the traditional rolled brigadeiro) right, and ended up testing a different way of selling the candy. “I thought ‘why don’t I sell soft brigadeiro for us to eat with a spoon?’”, she says.

Carol’s bet was right. The spoon brigadeiro is a success, it became a phenomenon and started to be sold in many establishments throughout Brazil.

not everything is so sweet

The businesswoman said that her career years were not just good days, quite the opposite. There were negative moments, but one, in particular, marked the baker’s life: the loss of an apartment.

“I had a consultant who at first advised me not to pay tax. The accounts didn’t close and he said ‘you don’t have to pay the tax, the government doesn’t come after’, and I didn’t pay tax for 5 years. The day the government foreclosed on the debt, I lost my apartment,” recalls Carole.

The businesswoman says that for those starting out it is essential to know the basics of business, which taxes have to be paid and how to make cash flow, for example.

In addition, Carole gave tips for anyone who wants to make extra income selling candy:

  • Hygiene and food safety is essential;
  • Understand the cost of your work;
  • Know how to price your product;
  • Reinvest in your business;
  • Shrink your audience niche.
