Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that evil has returned to Ukraine as he delivers an emotional speech on “Victory Day” as Europe celebrates Germany’s formal surrender to the Allies in World War II.
The lives soldiers had fought for in that war came to an end on February 24 when Russian forces invaded, Zelensky said in a video message.
“Evil has returned. Again!” said the president. “In a different way, under different slogans, but with the same purpose”. But Zelensky said Ukraine and its allies would win.
“No evil can escape responsibility, it cannot hide in a bunker,” he added in a possible reference to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, who spent the last days of his life in a bunker in Berlin, where he committed suicide in the final days of the war.
In Russia, Victory Day is celebrated on May 9, and it is one of the most important national events in the country – a reminder of the enormous sacrifices made by the Soviet Union in defeating Germany.
