Anyone who likes the world of fashion, photography and social media must have heard of André Nicolau at some point. In addition to being a photographer and influencer, the 34-year-old from Rio is always running between trips and events with his friends and famous friends. But anyone who sees him that way today cannot imagine the path that led him to success.
On the 39th episode of the No Lucro CNN podcast, André tells how it went from his first job at a clothing store in the mall to signing contracts worth more than R$120,000. Nicolau followed his natural impulse towards photography, leaving several college courses aside, and today he signs national and international editorials.
With an entrepreneurial spirit since he was a child, the photographer said he always seized the opportunity when it appeared. “There was always a long queue at the post office in my city. I took water from the hose, put it in a glass and sold each one for 50 cents to the people who were there (…) then I spent it all in the little shop for R$ 1.99 ”, he revealed.
The habit of earning money and spending it right away, however, remains to this day. In conversation with presenter Leandro Munhos, André explained that the unpredictability of his financial returns makes him “anxious”, but that he has learned to deal with it throughout his 15-year career. Now, he spends when he is “happy”, but without leaving debt behind, and tries to learn how to invest.
Obviously there are people who want to see who I’m hanging out with and where I’m going and everything, but I always want to remember that I’m a photographer
friendships of millions
Just enter the Instagram profile to realize that André Nicolau’s group of friends is totally VIP. Among global and relevant names in the fashion market and the like, the photographer explained that at the beginning of his career he had the support of names he considers “godmothers” and “godfathers”, such as Giovanna Ewbank and Bruno Gagliasso, for example.
Despite not having grown up in the field, André told the podcast that he pursued it from an early age and that things happened naturally: “I started studying theater when I was young and I met many people before I became famous. They were just actors studying, and over time they became known. I started making stuff [fotos] friends, and then it became a job”.
