The Chinese rover Yutu 2 has spotted a mysterious object on the horizon while making its way through the Von Karman crater on the far side of the moon.

Yutu 2 spotted a cube-shaped object on the horizon to the north about 80 meters away in November during the 36th lunar day of the mission, according to Yutu 2’s diary published by Our Space, a Chinese news channel affiliated with China’s National Space Administration (CNSA).

It has already been dubbed the “mystery hut,” but that’s more of a placeholder name than an accurate description. Scientists have shown great interest in the object, and Yutu 2 is now expected to spend the next 2-3 lunar days (2-3 Earth months) moving towards the object and avoiding craters to get a better view.

The most likely explanation would be a large boulder that appeared as a result of a meteorite falling. Andrew Jones, a journalist specializing in China’s space program, said: “This is not an obelisk or an alien structure, but it’s definitely worth checking out. It is difficult to see anything in the image. Large rocks are sometimes the result of collisions, as was already discovered during the Chang’e 3 mission launched eight years ago (photo below). “

The solar-powered lander Yutu 2 and Chang’e 4 made the first ever landing on the far side of the moon on January 3, 2019, and has since traveled 186 kilometers through Von Karman crater.
