A new function has appeared in SberBank ATMs. Now the bank’s clients can return their expired plastic card for recycling directly to the ATM. This is stated in a press release from SberBank.
To dispose of the card, you just need to insert it into the ATM. If the card has expired, a corresponding notification will appear on the ATM display with a proposal to hand it over for recycling. If the user agrees, the card will remain in the ATM and then will be disposed of. At the time of the launch of this function, it is available on 10,000 Sberbank ATMs, and by the end of 2021 the financial institution promises to increase their number to 33,000.
According to the deputy chairman of the board of Sberbank, Sergei Maltsev, one of the bank’s tasks is to provide services without harming the environment. And the emergence of the function of recycling plastic cards at ATMs is one of Sberbank’s steps in integrating the principles of sustainable development into everyday life. And this initiative, according to the top manager, should make a huge contribution to the recycling of plastic in Russia. The thing is that plastic cards are made of PVC, a complex plastic that must be recycled separately from other plastic products. But the majority of Russians, when their bank cards expire, simply throw them into household waste, and in this case, the plastic from which the card was made will continue to pollute the soil for centuries.
