On the internet, Russians sell McDonald’s products after the chain’s suspension in the country

After the temporary suspension of all McDonald’s activities in Russia, a reaction by the company to the attacks against Ukraine, snacks and products from the chain are being offered for sale on the internet at haute cuisine prices.

In one of the ads, the user advertises “frozen hamburgers” for 50,000 rubles, about $463. Another publication advertises “McDonald’s boxes for collection”. In the photo, you can see the packaging in which the products are sold. The user asks for 100,000 rubles for the boxes, just the boxes, an average of $926.

One of the users asks for 47,000 rubles, about US$435 (R$ 2,208) for a combo with two sandwiches, two bags of potatoes and a pie. Also, in the description he says he accepts “an iPhone 13” in exchange.

The posts were made on the website Avito, a Russian classifieds portal that also contains sections for jobs, real estate, cars and services.

The fast-food chain announced the temporary suspension of its 847 stores in Russia on the 8th of this month. The decision was made after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as a way of reacting to the conflict and putting pressure on the country.

In his official statement, the company’s president, Chris Kempczinski, wrote that “the conflict in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Europe are causing unspeakable suffering to innocent people. We join the world in condemning aggression and violence and in praying for peace.”

The network also stated that it will continue to pay the salary of the 62,000 employees it had in Russia, as well as maintaining the social structures it has in the region, such as the Ronald McDonald support houses.
