Every time we pack for travel, specific care and preparations must be considered.
Adventure tourism, for example, may require special training or equipment. A luxury trip demands financial planning; a cultural itinerary, on the other hand, asks for some previous knowledge and attention to the rules of etiquette and local traditions.
In case of wine tourism we are talking about experiences that explore all our senses. The ability to interpret local landscapes and decipher new aromas, flavors and textures are put to the test in order to trace the entire route that goes from the terroir to the wine in the glass.
And this is not exclusive to experts on the subject: anyone can embark on this sensory experience.
Below, check out 10 tips to get the most out of a trip involving wine tourism:
1 . Schedule the visit in advance . Many wineries offer not only tastings, but also other tours by reservation, such as picnics, bike tours and sensory experiences;
two . If possible, arrange to go at harvest time , which is an excellent opportunity to better understand the wine production process. In the countries of the Southern Hemisphere it usually happens between February and April; in the Northern Hemisphere, between August and October;
3 . program at maximum two wineries a day , so that the trip is pleasant and not tiring. One suggestion is to start in the morning at a winery that offers lunch and schedule a second property in the afternoon, until sunset;
4 . merge small and large wineries on the itinerary . The big ones usually have a more complete tour of all the production processes – from the visit to the vineyard to the cellar, where the winemaking takes place. The small ones are an opportunity to talk and learn directly with the person who produces the wine;
5. use comfortable clothes and shoes , the wineries are generally rural properties, where you walk a lot, including through the vineyards. Remember to take a jacket, because the visit to the cellars is always very cold;
