On this day, April 12: The trial for the mysterious murder of George Polk begins

On this day, 75 years ago, one of the biggest political and judicial developments in Greece began. On April 12, 1949, the trial of Grigoris Staktopoulos, the journalist of the Makedonia newspaper, who was accused of having taken part in the conspiracy to kill the distinguished American journalist George Polk, began in the criminal court of Thessaloniki, a year before. The mysterious murder of the American journalist George Polk in the middle of the Civil War in Thessaloniki in May 1948, shocked Greek and international public opinion. The “Polk case” trial was challenged after the “evidence” was fabricated. The local officials of the Communist Party, Adam Mouzenidis and Vangelis Vasvanas, as well as the journalist, Grigoris Staktopoulos, were accused of the crime.
