On this day, August 11: Tasos Isaac is murdered

On this day, August 11, 1996, Cyprus experienced one of the darkest and most tragic moments of its modern history. The killing of Tasos Isaac, a young Cypriot who participated in a peaceful demonstration in Deryneia, near the ceasefire line, is an open wound that continues to cause grief and reflection. The Cypriot Motorcyclist Federation had organized a large anti-occupation march, starting in Berlin and ending in occupied Kyrenia. This march, with the participation of 200 motorcyclists from 12 European countries, aimed to raise awareness among the international community about the ongoing Turkish occupation of Cyprus, 22 years after the Turkish invasion of 1974. Despite the threats from the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey, the demonstrators decided to continue their march, culminating in their arrival in Deryneia. There, the situation got out of control.
