The Rio – Antirio Bridge, also known as the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge, is one of the largest cable-stayed bridges in the world and is an important infrastructure project in Greece. It connects the Peloponnese with Central Greece, passing over the Gulf of Patras, and allows fast and safe passage from Rio, a suburb of Patras, to Antirrio, located in Central Greece. The idea of the bridge dates back to the 19th century, when Charilaos Trikoupis, Prime Minister of Greece, first proposed its construction in 1889. However, the technology of the time did not allow the project to be implemented. Trikoupi’s dream began to come true only at the end of the 20th century. Construction work began in 1998 and was completed in 2004, with the official opening of the bridge taking place on 7 August 2004, a few days before the start of the Athens Olympic Games.
