On this day, August 15: The Woodstock Festival begins, a celebration of music and peace

On this day, August 15, 1969, Woodstock began, the legendary music festival that was to mark an entire generation and go down in history as the ultimate symbol of peace, love and freedom. The festival took place in rural Bethel, New York, and gathered more than 400,000 people in a celebration that combined music with social resistance. Also known as “3 Days of Peace & Music”, Woodstock played host to some of the biggest names in the music scene of the time, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, and Santana. Although it was conceived as a commercial event, it developed into a mass event with strong political and social content, as the ideals of resistance to the Vietnam War and tolerance of cultural and social differences prevailed.
