On this day in 1937, Franklin Roosevelt was sworn in as president of the United States, and since then January 20 has been set as the day when the inauguration ceremony will take place, hence the inauguration of the new president of the United States, Donald Trump, is expected today. The first swearing-in ceremony took place on April 30, 1789, in New York, then the capital of the USA. George Washington became the country’s first president, but the process was not as immediate as it is today, as the counting of votes required up to four months. For this reason, March 4 was established as the swearing-in date. This tradition changed in 1937, when Franklin Roosevelt was sworn in as president on January 20, following the ratification of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
