On this day, July 17: Ikaria becomes an independent state – The unknown history of the “Free State of Ikaria”

There was a short period when Ikaria was an independent state! On July 17, 1912, the people of Ikaria rebelled against the Ottoman Empire, taking advantage of the weakness of the Turks due to the Italo-Turkish War. The revolution led to the creation of the “Free State of Ikaria”, an independent state that also included the Fournos. This new state had its own flag, anthem, stamps, courts, and armed guards. The administration of Ikaria was temporary and lasted from July to November 1912. The rebels organized the defense and administration of the island, with Doctor Ioannis Malachias and Priest Konstantinos Kouloulias leading the forces. Their two groups managed to liberate the northern part of the island and unite in Evdilos, preparing the attack on the capital Agios Kirikos.
