The Popular Revolution, also known as the “Rebellion of the Popular”, was a result of the intense social and economic inequality that prevailed on the island during the period of the Venetian occupation and is one of the most important popular uprisings in the history of Zakynthos. The society of Zakynthos was divided into three main classes: the Nobles, who were aristocrats with full political rights, registered in the list of nobles Libro d’Oro (“Libro d’Oro”) or Golden Book, the Burghers, who were the middle class and they desired membership in the Council of Nobles and Commoners, who were the lower classes, such as farmers, fishermen, and laborers, without civil rights and often conscripted for the island’s defense.
