On this day June 28: Stonewell, New York riots – A landmark day for the gay movement

On June 28, 1969, riots break out at the Stonewall Inn, a popular bar for the LGBT community in New York’s Greenwich Village. The police raid the bar, as usual, but this time the patrons fight back. The violent resistance lasted six days, with the participation of thousands of people and was the trigger for the birth of the modern homosexual movement and Gay Pride. A year later, the first pride march took place, marking a new era for the rights of the LGBT community.
