On October 17, 1814, in London, one of the strangest accidents in history took place, leaving nine dead. A massive beer tank, with a capacity of over a million litres, has burst at Meux & Co’s Horse Shoe Brewery, sending a deadly wave of beer into the surrounding streets. The streets of Central London turned into a torrent, sowing chaos. The force of the flood was such that it destroyed walls of neighboring houses and trapped several people in their homes, leading them to death either by drowning or by the debris. Residents of the poor neighborhood near the brewery suffered the worst, as most of the dead were women and children. Despite the tragic outcome, the incident went down in history for its uniqueness.
