The new version of the film “New Wave ” got its trailer this Friday (19). Sent exclusively to the CNN the trailer shows excerpts from the film that premiered at the 7th São Paulo International Film Festival in 1983 and challenged the Military Dictatorship.
“Onda Nova” was originally released in 1983 to portray the women’s soccer team Gayvotas Futebol Clube. The film, which openly deals with gender issues and female sexuality, was censored by the dictatorship shortly after its release.
With Carla Camurati and Cristina Mutarelli as the main actresses, the film features the team in the year that women’s football was legalized in Brazil in 1979.
“This team of young women from São Paulo challenges the prevailing morals about gender and sexuality, while the players deal with their personal problems,” describes the synopsis.
“Onda Nova” features guest appearances by names such as Caetano Veloso , Regina Case and the then player Walter Casagrande . At the time, Casagrande was one of the players who took part in the beginning of the Corinthian Democracy movement.
The film was remastered in 4K, with the new version selected for screening at the Locarno festival (Switzerland) and the São Paulo International Film Festival this year.
The film is made by Boca do Lixo, which was the film production hub in the Santa Ifigênia neighborhood, in São Paulo, during the 1960s and 1980s.
