The pro-Iranian Hashd al-Shaabi (“Popular Mobilization Units”) militia, which has joined the Iraqi army, announced on Saturday that a powerful explosion had occurred at its headquarters, about 50 kilometers south of Baghdad. One fighter was killed and six others were wounded, hospital sources cited by the Reuters news agency said. The Al Arabiya network reported that the base was the target of a missile attack, however it remains unclear who launched it. US Central Command, or CENTCOM, denied any involvement. “We have been made aware of reports that the US launched airstrikes in Iraq today. These reports are not true. The US did not launch airstrikes in Iraq today,” a CENTCOM post on Platform X (formerly Twitter) said. An Israeli official, who spoke to the American network CNN on condition of anonymity, assured that Israel was not responsible.
