This Wednesday (17), the date on which the death of Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez turns 10 Netflix released the teaser for the series that adapts his best-known work: “One hundred years of Solitude” .
The book, published in 1967, is considered one of the most important in Latin America and fantastic realism, the literary current responsible for the “boom” of Latin American literature in the second half of the 20th century.
It was thanks to him that García Márquez received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982.
“One hundred years of Solitude” follows seven generations of the Buendías, one of the founding families of Macondo, the fictional village in which the story takes place.
The work narrates the lives of the members of this family, mixing magical elements in everyday scenarios, in which the characters don't even seem to realize the absurdity of the situations they experience. The book tells not only the story full of ups and downs, and the good and bad luck of the Buendías, but also the place where they live.
However, as García Márquez himself stated in a conversation with another renowned name in Latin American literature, the Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa, he does not believe he invented anything so surreal in his works: “I believe that, particularly in 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' I am a realistic writer, because I believe that in Latin America everything is possible, everything is real.”
“What happens is that, in Latin America, by decree an event that resulted in around three thousand deaths is forgotten… This, which seems fantastic, was taken from the most miserable daily reality”, he added, referring to one of the excerpts from his book .
The characters portrayed by the Colombian writer and their lives represent the population of an entire continent, which shares a similar past and still struggles to overcome historical difficulties.
It is no surprise that García Márquez decides to give repeated names to the Buendías, since the different generations still seem to face the same problems. Over 100 years, there have been more than 20 Aurelianos and almost half a dozen José Arcádios in the family.
Adaptation of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” for series
As one of the conditions for its completion, the Netflix production was filmed entirely in Spanish in Colombia and had the support of Gabriel García Márquez's family — who released an unpublished book by the author in March.
The series is directed by Laura Mora Ortega and Alex García López and will be released in 2024 by Netflix, which acquired the rights to adapt the book in 2019.
