Currently, one in five health plan beneficiaries faces obesity, according to an exclusive study carried out by the Institute of Supplementary Health Studies (IESS).

15 years ago, in 2008, the first year analyzed by the research, the proportion of people with this problem was one in eight.

The survey, which used the Telephone Survey for Surveillance of Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases (Vigitel) from 2008 to 2021, as a database.

It shows that the prevalence of this health problem among beneficiaries grew by 7.2 percentage points in this period, jumping from 12.9% to 20.1%.

Among the years analyzed, there was a peak in the percentage of obese people in Brazil in 2020, when the rate reached 21.1%.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers obesity a global epidemic, which is associated with the development of several other diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
