One in four Brits skips meals due to price hikes, survey shows

Cost of living pressure in the UK has two out of three people turning off their heating, nearly half driving less or switching supermarkets and just over a quarter saying they are skipping meals, a survey showed.

Among low-income people, one in three says they have been without meals recently because of rising inflation, research firm Ipsos reported on Tuesday.

Concerns about inflation are at their highest level in 30 years and most Britons predict increases in the cost of essentials over the next six months, according to the survey.

“Given the economic forecasts, there may be more anxiety on the horizon,” said Gideon Skinner, head of policy research at Ipsos.

“This will keep the pressure on the government to take more steps to help people face the cost of living crisis.”

Data from next Wednesday are expected to show consumer price inflation hit 9.1% in April, according to economists polled by Reuters, and the Bank of England expects it to exceed 10% later this year.

Finance Minister Rishi Sunak resists pressure to do more now to tackle the crisis for many families.

He says he wants to see the extent of the next domestic energy tariff hike in the fall before deciding on more support.

A separate YouGov poll showed that 72% of respondents thought Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government was mishandling the economy, nearly double the proportion a year ago.

Ipsos surveyed 2,061 people on May 11-12, while YouGov surveyed 1,810 people on May 14-16.
