In Brazil, one LGBTI+ person was violently killed every 32 hours in 2022. In all, 273 people were murdered between January and December last year, according to the Dossier on Deaths and Violence Against LGBTI+ in Brazil.
More than half of the victims, 159, were transvestites and trans women, representing 58% of the murders. In all, 96 gay men were violently killed in 2022.
About a third of the victims were aged between 20 and 29. Already 19% of them were between 30 and 39 years old.
The State of Ceará had the highest violent LGBTI+ mortality in 2022. There were 34 deaths. In São Paulo, 29 murders were recorded. Considering the number of victims per 1 million inhabitants, Ceará also leads the ranking (3.8 deaths), followed by Alagoas (3.52) and Amazonas (3.29).
The Dossier on Deaths and Violence Against LGBTI+ in Brazil was produced by the Observatory of Deaths and Violence against LGBTI+ in Brazil, in the midst of a partnership between Lugar Arte e Política LGBTI+, National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (Antra) and the Brazilian Association of Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite, Transgender and Intersex (ABGLT).
The document will be officially launched on May 16 in Brasilia, during an event by the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship and the National Secretariat for the Rights of LGBTQIA+ People.
