A Chinese man was arrested in Ecuador as well was trying to smuggle 213 dead seahorses into the Netherlands, announced today the prosecutor’s office of Quito.
The man was arrested at Guayaquil International Airport in southwest Ecuador as he tried to board a plane bound for Amsterdam, according to the same source.
The seahorses he was trying to smuggle into the Netherlands belonged to an endangered species. They were in five plastic bags, which weighed half a kilo each, and he had put them in various places in one of his luggage.
This man is forbidden to leave the country before the end of his trial.
Ecuadorian law punishes crimes against wildlife with sentences that can go up to three years in prison, the prosecutor’s office said.
