For the murder of the anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galicia is accused of being one of its richest businessmen Malta, Jürgen Fenek, according to prosecutors in court documents filed today. However, it is clarified that a date for the trial has not been set yet.
According to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, Fenek was arrested in November 2019 on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder. Since then, he has been subject to pre-trial gathering of evidence in which he has declared his innocence.

Three men accused of planting and detonating the bomb were arrested in December 2017. One of them pleaded guilty in court and was jailed for 15 years. The other two are awaiting trial.
The mediator of the murder conspiracy, as he has confessed, Melvin Teuma, handed over information to the state and received a pardon. He said Fenek had commissioned him to carry out the assassination.
The arrest
According to court officials, prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for Fenek, who was arrested on November 20, 2019, while his yacht was off Malta in an attempt – according to police – to escape from the island.
The then Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat, announced his resignation a few days after Fenek’s arrest, when the existence of close ties between the businessman and high-ranking government officials was discovered. Muscat himself denied anything reprehensible.
An independent inquiry into the killing of Caruana Galicia said last month that the state was responsible for the killing after creating a “culture of impunity”.
