One of the bodies found this Sunday (12) is a victim of a shipwreck in Rio

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro confirmed that one of the bodies found this Sunday (12) near the island of Mocangê is one of the victims of the shipwreck that occurred in Guanabara Bay on February 5th.

The body belongs to Fábio Dantas Soares. The second body, of a woman, remains unrecognized.

Before confirmation, the Secretary of State for Civil Defense and General Commander of CBMERJ, Colonel Leandro Monteiro said: “If it is confirmed by the IML that they are the last two missing victims of the shipwreck, our mission will be accomplished. It is a great encouragement for family members and friends of these victims to be able to carry out a dignified burial”.

“The Fire Department has worked tirelessly since it became aware of the wreck, day and night, with drones, helicopters, boats, divers and ATVs. So I want to take this opportunity to congratulate our military,” he added.

On February 5, the vessel Caiçara sank in Guanabara Bay, near Paquetá Island. It was raining heavily at the time of the accident.

Of the 14 people who were on the vessel, six were rescued alive by crew members from other vessels passing near the accident site.

During searches carried out on the same day as the sinking, firefighters found three bodies.

The next day, three other people were also found dead. Two victims are considered missing, one woman and one man, both with the same gender as the bodies found this Sunday (12).

The Brazilian Navy and the Civil Police are investigating the causes of the accident and whether there was negligence, malpractice or imprudence.
