YouTube announced yesterday that it will be possible to activate background playback in the YouTube Music app for free. This feature will be available in Canada starting November 3rd. It is not yet known whether the list of countries will be expanded.
Currently, the YouTube Music app only supports background playback for YouTube Premium subscribers. If you are not a premium user, you cannot minimize the application and continue listening to music. If you switch to any other application or desktop, playback will stop.

Thanks to this feature, users will be able to use YouTube Music in parallel with other applications. If you have downloaded any songs, you can also play them at any time.
However, no one canceled ads, so if you don’t like listening to ads between songs, you will have to pay a premium subscription. https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/dont-stop-the-music/
