One year is completed by his murder George Floyd and his relatives marched in Minneapolis yesterday.
About 1,500 people protested, a march attended by, in addition to Floyd’s relatives, members of the families of other African-Americans who confronted police.
The march began in front of the courthouse where on April 20 Derek Sovin, the police officer who on May 25 last year he kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost 9 minutes causing his death, he was found guilty of manslaughter. Sauvin is now in jail, with his sentence due to be announced on July 25.
THE Floyd’s phrase “I can not breathe” was the main slogan of the protesters in the hundreds of marches that took place after his death in the US and around the world against racism and police violence, as recalled by AMPE.
During yesterday’s march, the first of many planned across the country for the first anniversary of Floyd’s assassination, many people held banners with his photo, as well as those of other African Americans who were shot dead by police.
“It was a long year, it was a painful year,” his sister, Bridget Floyd, told the crowd. “It was awesome for me and my family to change our lives so abruptly, I still don’t know why,” he added.
“What happened to George Floyd and so many others brought about a change not only in America but in the world,” said Reverend Al Sharpton, a well-known anti-racism figure, who described Floyd’s assassination. “One of the greatest shames in American history.”
“We want something to come out of Washington. We want something that will change the federal legislation “, he added. “Justice has been delayed too long.”
The George Floyd Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit founded by George Floyd brothers in September to address racial inequality, will hold a series of events in Minneapolis this week to honor his memory.

One year after the incident in Minneapolis Violent incidents continue to erupt, with homicides and armed attacks – most recently three children being wounded by bullets – resulting in residents patrolling their neighborhoods.
Mayor Jacob Frey plans to create an additional 200 police posts and said he supports residents’ initiatives, including patrols.
“Our greatest strength is when we work together to ensure the safety of our city,” local police chief Mentaria Arandodo said on Saturday after a new shooting incident in which two people were killed.
