OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed in an interview with reporters that his company does not plan to release the flagship OnePlus 9T smartphone this year, and the next flagship of the Chinese manufacturer will run on a new unified operating system, which is being developed in conjunction with OPPO. The company previously announced that it intends to merge the OxygenOS and ColorOS codebases.
This will be the first time a OnePlus smartphone has gone without a ‘T’ version since the OnePlus 3T launched in 2016. Since then, the company has traditionally released a new smartphone of this series in the second half of each year. Despite the similar names, the T-series devices have always offered significant upgrades from the base versions of the flagships. For example, the 8T has about twice the charging speed of a regular G8, and the 7T boasts an increased refresh rate of up to 90 Hz.
As a result of the merger of OnePlus and OPPO, the two companies are merging the OxygenOS and ColorOS codebases. According to Pete Lau, the two Android operating systems will continue to have their own branding and unique features, but the code behind them will be shared and the development team will continue to develop them. By design, this approach should lead to an operating system that is “fast, smooth and light, like OxygenOS, as well as reliable, smart and feature-rich, like ColorOS.”
The integration of the codebase of the two operating systems was completed in June, and this is already contributing to more frequent software updates. The company intends to transfer to the new OS not only future smartphones, but also already released devices, which will receive appropriate updates. In addition to merging the two companies’ operating systems, OnePlus will also borrow the SuperVOOC fast charging standard from OPPO.
