Online retail pulls demand for temporary employees

The advance of e-commerce and the rush of electronic retailing to deliver orders quickly boosted the hiring of temporary logistics workers at the end of the year.

Admissions to distribution centers and e-commerce support services grew at a rate twice that of traditional retail.

Between October and December of this year, the admissions of temporary logistics staff increased by almost 50% compared to the last quarter of 2020.

Also compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, the pre-pandemic phase, the hiring for logistics this year is about 30% higher, reveals a survey carried out at the request of the State by the Brazilian Association of Temporary Work (Asserttem).

In absolute numbers, most of the temporary retail at the end of the year are still in the physical store, but the speed of opening of service stations has been much slower in relation to logistics.

Traditional commerce hired 84.7 thousand temporary workers in the last quarter, compared to 70 thousand in 2020, an increase of 21%. Compared to the same period in 2019, the drop was 3%.

Asserttem’s president, Marcos Abreu, said that the sector’s performance is “the big surprise”. “It is the segment that increases the most,” he stated.

Mercado Livre, for example, which expected to hire more than 800 temporary workers by the end of December, reported on the eve of Black Friday that it had hired more than 2,000.

Via, which owns Casas Bahia and Ponto, hired 1,200 temporary workers for logistics, 20% more than in recent years. Magazine Luiza also admitted 4,000 temporary workers to the sector, 2.4 thousand more than in the previous year.

Difference

Gabriela Mative, HR director at Luandre, one of the largest temporary agencies in the country, said that admissions to traditional retail increased by 20% this year, while in online the advance was 60%.

About 70% of temporary jobs in logistics are for operators, a position that can be compared to store salesperson. Those who occupy this position are usually young people looking for their first job, like 18-year-old Luana Gabriele Ramos.

After working for 11 months as a young apprentice, she joined in March a temporary position as an e-commerce service operator. In September, the contract was renewed until the end of this month.

“The vacancy appeared, I came, I liked it and I intend to continue”, he said. But the dream of Luana and thousands of temporary workers to be hired is at risk. Given the poor performance of retail registered so far, CNC reduced from 12.2% to 4.9% the effective rate for 2022.
