Only 9% of university graduates in the EU have studied for even three months abroadparticipating in mobility programs, according to its data Eurostat. In 2021, around 4.3 million graduates graduated in the EU, of which only 386,900 had studied abroad during their degree, for at least 3 months.

Among EU countries, the largest number of graduates who studied for even three months abroad was in France, with approximately 176,100 students, or 45.5% of the total. Germany comes second with a percentage of 17.8%, with 68,700 students who studied abroad. Spain ranked third with around 40,100 students and a rate of 10.4%. The top three destinations for EU university students abroad are the UK at 10.7%, Spain (9.4%) and the United States (7.5%).

In some cases, factors such as language, cultural and historical ties, as well as geographical proximity play an important role. Some EU countries attract high percentages of students from specific EU countries. Greece, for example, had by far the highest percentage of students from Cyprus at 68%. Germany received 29.9% of students from Luxembourg, while the Czech Republic hosted 27% of students from Slovakia.

Looking at the top three destinations within the EU, Spain and Germany are the most common destinations, while among non-EU countries, the top destinations are the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia.
