In the Chinese version of TikTok, called Douyin, there is a restriction on the use of the application by people under 14 years old – no more than 40 minutes a day. In addition, children are now prohibited from using the social network between 22:00 and 06:00. These limits apply only to users who register under their real names – the developers encourage parents to check this or activate the “teenage mode” of using Douyin in any other way. This was reported by CNN Business.
Recently, the Chinese authorities have taken up the issue of regulating content for children on social platforms – the 14 largest services from the Middle Kingdom (Douyin, Weibo, Youku and others) have signed the “Convention on Self-Discipline”, thereby pledging to carefully moderate the content that children can see. Now, on these platforms, it is forbidden to promote excessive consumption, brag about wealth, organize events without approval, and more. Douyin also began to display more informative content in recommendations for children: scientific experiments, museums, art gallery exhibitions, and the like.
Considering that restrictive innovations appeared in Douyin only after the initiative of the Chinese government and the signing of the “Convention on Self-Discipline” by the developer company, it is safe to say that nothing of the kind will appear in Russia and other countries. At least until local authorities want to tackle the issue of regulating children’s content in a similar way.
Recall, according to Russian media, in the past Yandex, Mail.ru Group, Kaspersky Lab, MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, Rostelecom, Gazprom-Media and National Media Group were preparing to sign the charter to protect children on the Internet. According to the document, corporations must independently find and remove content that is undesirable for children, as well as promote educational and creative publications.
