Only Michelle Obama, wife of former Democratic President Barack Obama, would beat Donald Trump in a hypothetical 2024 presidential election, by 50% to 39%, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
However, Michelle, author of the 2018 bestselling memoir “Becoming,” has repeatedly said she does not intend to run for president.
According to the survey, both Trump and Joe Biden maintain 40% of voting intentions among registered voters.
Democrats appear behind Trump
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris trails Trump by one percentage point (42% to 43%), a difference within the 3.5 percentage point margin of error of the Reuters/Ipsos poll.
This makes a Harris candidacy statistically as strong as a Biden candidacy.
The vice president has stepped out of Biden’s shadow in recent months, becoming a key voice in the administration for abortion rights. The Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 81% of Democratic voters viewed Harris favorably, compared with 78% who viewed Biden the same way.
The survey also asked about potential confrontations between other Democratic Party candidates and Donald Trump. These were the results:
- Donald Trump 42% vs. 39% Gavin Newsom, Governor of California
- Donald Trump 40% vs. 36% Andy Beshear, Governor of Kentucky
- Donald Trump 41% vs. 36% Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan
- Donald Trump 40% vs. 34% JB Pritzker, Governor of Illinois
None of the Democrats tested in the poll in head-to-head matchups against Trump have formally declared their candidacy. Furthermore, several of these names are not well-known nationally.
About 70% of Democrats in the poll said they had never heard of Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. Still, some Democratic donors see him as a good candidate after his gubernatorial victory in a heavily Republican state.
So Beshear trailing Trump by a narrow margin in the poll illustrated just how deeply Democrats oppose Trump.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll, which was conducted online and interviewed 1,070 U.S. adults across the country.
