“Russian President Vladimir Putin is committing war crimes in Ukraine and more sanctions are the only way to stop him,” Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said in a Twitter post on Monday.
“The Russian army has devastated Mariupol, Ukraine. The whole world sees that innocent people are dying because of this war,” Fiala wrote. “We must keep pushing for a clear and united approach to Russia and more sanctions, it’s the only way to stop Putin,” she concluded.
The West has been applying sanctions to Russia and citizens of the country close to Vladimir Putin in recent weeks. Despite already having an impact on the Russian population, the measures have not been effective in stopping the Russian offensive.
“Ultimately, this will reinforce our independence, self-reliance and sovereignty,” the president declared at a government meeting in early March. Putin bets that these punishments will benefit Russia and Belarus: “The last few years have shown that where Westerners have imposed restrictions against us, we have acquired new skills and restored old ones to a new technological level.”
Last week, Russia adopted a “reciprocity” policy, banning President Joe Biden and senior US officials from entering the country, as well as threatening economic sanctions against citizens and businesses in NATO-allied countries.
While the attacks have not abated, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said economic sanctions have “hurt the war machine.” The Kremlin, on the other hand, says that despite the economic measures, the Russian government is willing to talk to the US government.
China
The United States is preparing a series of sanctions on China if the country provides military and economic aid to Russia, according to information from US government officials. The Asian giant has positioned itself in a neutral way, although experts see this as a position of support for the Russians.
“In the speech of many Chinese authorities, there is no direct condemnation of Russian actions, there is no use of the term “invasion”, evaluates USP professor Felipe Loureiro, in an interview with CNN.
