The latest newsletter from National Electric System Operator (ONS) shows that the storage levels of the Southeast/Midwest subsystem, responsible for about 70% of energy generation in Brazil, should reach 26.1% of its capacity in December.
If the projection materializes, the reservoirs in the region will have the best water volume in the last five months. In July, the reservoirs of the subsystem were at 29%.
According to the ONS, the Northeast and North reservoirs should also present better storage levels by the end of December. According to the bulletin, the reservoirs in the regions will have 47.5% and 40.6% of their maximum capacity in the period.
Currently, subsystems register 36.9% and 34.5%, respectively. Only the South of Brazil showed a worsening in the water scenario for the month of December, with a drop from the current 55.2% of its capacity to 49.9%.
Brazilian reservoirs continue to recover. This is the case of the Furnas Plant reservoir, responsible for 40% of the energy consumed in the country, which in October registered 18.27% and, in November, reached 21.33%. The GB Munhoz reservoir, in the South, also showed improvement, going from 55.25%, in October this year, to 65.78% this month.
The report released this Friday (26th) shows that the good results are mainly related to the volume of rain in practically all regions of the country, which has been increasing for at least three consecutive weeks.
During the period of greatest water scarcity in Brazil, which took place in September this year, the reservoirs in the Southeast/Midwest subsystem reached only 16% of their maximum capacity.
“Two frontal systems advance across the country during the operating week, one at the beginning of the week causing light rain in isolated points of the basins of the Southeast region, and the second, when reaching the Southeast and Center-West regions, will cause high total precipitation in the basins of the Paranaíba, Tocantins and Madeira rivers and in the middle São Francisco”, highlights an excerpt from the National Operator’s bulletin.
Finally, the ONS survey points out that the greater volume of rain in the country reduced the forecast demand for load in December, as the milder temperature makes Brazilians use less electronic devices, such as air conditioning.
The National Interconnected System (SIN) shows that energy demand for the first week of December will be 0.5% lower than that registered in the same period last year.
The sharpest drop in the forecast load occurs in the Southeast/Midwest, which registers a reduction of 1.6%. In Rio de Janeiro, the Civil Defense issued, this Friday (26), a warning of moderate to heavy rain and gusts of wind for the next few days.
