By the end of April, all Brazilian reservoirs should register an increase in water volume, when compared to the previous month. This is what the most recent bulletin from the National Electric System Operator (ONS) projects, released this week. According to the report, the positive scenario is influenced by the high levels of rainfall present in much of the country.
After a slight drop in the previous month, the storage of the Southeast/Midwest subsystem has recovered and is expected to reach 67.3% by the end of April, according to the ONS bulletin. In the last forecast, the expectation was that the region, responsible for a large part of Brazil’s energy generation, would close the month with a maximum volume of 66%.
The southern subsystem, which is recovering from a water shortage, is forecast to increase by more than 3.5% in the water volume of the reservoirs in April, compared to March. As a result, mills in the region can reach a maximum capacity of 59.6%. Despite the recovery, the reservoirs in the south still show the worst indicators in the country, caused by the worst drought in the region in the last 90 years.
Already with the best results among the Brazilian regions appear the hydroelectric plants of the Northeast and North of the country. Respectively, according to the ONS, the reservoirs in the regions should present 97.2% and 99.7% by the end of April.
The good results of the reservoirs are pulled by the greater amount of rain for the month. In the southern region of the country, rainfall will be 45% more voluminous compared to the historical average for the period. The northern region of Brazil will have rains 5% higher than expected for the subsystem in April. The Southeast/Midwest and Northeast of the country will have a standard volume for the period, without water shortages.
“Next week, areas of instability will cause light to moderate rain in the Uruguay, Jacuí and Iguaçu basins, in the south of the country. Compared to the estimated values for the current week, a rise in the inflows of the Southern subsystem is expected for the next operative week. The monthly forecast for April indicates the occurrence of inflows slightly below the historical average for the Southeast and Northeast subsystems and above the historical average for the South and North subsystems”, highlights an excerpt from the ONS bulletin.
