ONS projects increase in energy demand in April

The National Electric System Operator (ONS) estimated that April will end with a 2.5% increase in the energy load of the National Interconnected System (SIN), compared to the same period last year.

This means that the demand for energy will increase, reflecting the increase in economic activity and the growing return of on-site work in the country.

The Southeast/Midwest subsystems, with a growth forecast of 5.6%, will be the main responsible for this positive variation. The Northeast should have a slight increase of 1.3%, but the subsystems of the South and North should see a reduction in the energy load.

This means that the load to be served in April must be greater than in the same month last year.

According to Diego Malagueta, professor of energy planning at UFRJ, “it is most likely that this increase is linked to changes in habits and rules of companies and institutions, returning to work regimes closer to pre-pandemic normality than we were in April. of 2021”.

Despite this growth forecast for the end of April, the war in Ukraine, which ends up affecting the projection of Brazilian GDP, also impacts domestic demand for energy, which could be even greater if it weren’t for these factors.

“Challenges in supply chains, the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the inflationary pressure scenario have reflected on the behavior of the SIN load”, pointed out the ONS in the bulletin of the Monthly Operational Program (PMO) released this Thursday. thursday (14th).

The ONS also estimated that on April 30, the reservoirs of thermoelectric plants in the North should reach 99.7% of their storage capacity, those in the Northeast 97.4%, those in the Southeast/Midwest 68.3% and the from the South 55.8%.

All predicted levels indicate slight growth in reservoir storage compared to current data.

The numbers maintain the trend of energy security, since there are no more problems with the supply of energy by hydroelectric plants in the country – at least at the moment, according to the ONS.
