OPCW ‘bell ringing’ on Syria – Warns of dangers posed by bombing chemical weapons facilities

The director general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) warned on Thursday 12/12 against potential bombings of facilities where chemical weapons are located in Syria. As he pointed out, they pose a risk of contamination and destruction of important evidence. After the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, the international community expressed concern about the fate of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile. Israel announced on Monday that it had struck “remaining chemical weapons” and “long-range missiles or rockets” to “keep them from falling into the hands of extremists”. The director general of the OPCW, Fernando Arias, assured that his services are “closely monitoring” the information about the bombing of Syrian military installations. “We don’t yet know if the bombings hit facilities linked to chemical weapons.
