In a teleconference on Monday, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) decided to appoint Haitham al-Qais of Kuwait as the new secretary general of OPEC.
He will take office on August 1st and his term will be three years, according to the announcement issued by OPEC.
Haitham al-Qais, a veteran of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and head of Kuwait’s mission to OPEC from 2017 to June 2021, is currently the Deputy Chief Marketing Officer for International Marketing at KPC.
At the meeting, OPEC members expressed their appreciation to Mohammad Sanousi Barkido, from Nigeria, for his two terms as Director General of the Organization from August 1, 2016 to July 31, 2022.
The elected secretary general of OPEC said on Monday that global oil demand is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2022, as broadcast by the television network Al Arabiya.
Haitham al-Qais, Kuwait’s former head of OPEC, also told Al Arabiya that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partners (OPEC +) have an important role to play in ensuring stability and balance in the markets.
OPEC on Monday decided to appoint al-Qais as secretary general, succeeding Nigerian Mohammad Sanushi Barquido. Haitham al-Qais will take office on August 1.
