Mohammad Barkindo, a Nigerian politician and OPEC secretary-general, has died at the age of 63, CNBC reported.
The head of the National Petroleum Corporation of Nigeria, Mele Kyari, announced the news in a tweet on Wednesday, which was confirmed by two OPEC sources.
“We have lost our esteemed Dr. Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo,” he tweeted early Wednesday morning from his Twitter account.
“He passed away at about 11pm yesterday 5th July 2022. This is a great loss to his immediate family, NNPC, our country Nigeria, OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced soon.”
Barkindo’s unexpected death came as a surprise to members of the oil and gas world, many of whom describe him as an industry giant.
His career spanned over four decades and included work at the National Petroleum Corporation of Nigeria, Duke Oil, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Energy, as well as OPEC.
While the organization lost two members, Qatar and Ecuador, during this period, Barkindo is nevertheless credited with driving unity among the group’s members in an effort to stabilize global oil markets.
Barkindo’s death comes at a time of volatile energy markets, global inflation, rising climate risks and significant fallout from the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. Geopolitical conflicts and sanctions have led to much tighter oil supplies, pushing prices to multi-year highs amid fears of a global recession.
