Opera VPN has been blocked in Russia

In Russia, from today, from June 17, 2021, restrictions are imposed on the use of VPN services VyprVPN and Opera VPN. This was announced by the press service of Roskomnadzor.

Opera VPN has been blocked in Russia

As the department explains, measures are taken in accordance with the regulations on responding to threats to circumvent restrictions on access to child pornography, suicidal, pro-narcotic and other prohibited content – these VPN services were classified as threats in accordance with the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of February 12, No. 127.

At the same time, Russian companies using VPN services in continuous technological processes can continue to use VyprVPN and Opera VPN services.

A total of 130 Russian companies were included in the “white list”. If any company wants to be included in the “white list”, then it is required to submit a request, which will be verified by the department.

According to Russian law, VPN services and anonymizers must connect to the state information system (FSIS) to block banned sites within 30 working days from the moment Roskomnadzor sends requests. If the services do not meet the requirements, Roskomnadzor may decide to block the VPN service itself.

Opera’s senior public relations manager Julia Sindzelorts reacted to the situation and told reporters:

Opera strives to provide its Russian users with an excellent browser experience. We decided to suspend support for VPN services in our browsers on the territory of the Russian Federation in the form in which it was provided earlier. ”
