Operation against electoral crimes is carried out in three cities in Bahia

Nine search and seizure warrants were carried out by the Federal Police this Tuesday morning (1st) in cities in Bahia. The operation, called Coronelismo, aims to combat electoral crimes by party coalitions. The warrants were carried out in Ilhéus, Conceição do Coité and Salvador.

According to the PF, the investigations point to the illegal use of the municipal public structure, with the use of public servants, vehicles and fuels, for the benefit of a certain party coalition, causing damage to the municipal public coffers.

During the investigations, alleged document fraud was also detected, with overpricing of contracts, practiced, in theory, to cover up the illegal use of the public structure for private benefit.

Those under investigation may be liable for the crime of using a public vehicle in an electoral campaign, the penalty for which is the cancellation of the candidate’s registration or their diploma, as well as for the crimes of embezzlement, forgery of public documents and criminal association.

The crimes investigated in the case may still constitute abuse of economic power and administrative improbity.

Last week, Mário Alexandre (PSD), mayor of Ilhéus, was the target of another PF operation (Barganha), which investigates possible crimes of corruption, diversion of resources, money laundering and gang formation. At the residence of one of the businessmen investigated, the police found around R$900,000 in cash.
