The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul arrested 85 people, on the morning of this Friday (6), during Operation “A Firma”, which aimed to combat a criminal organization responsible for the so-called “nude scam”.
The criminals created fake profiles on social media to lure victims in. They established conversations with the aim of gaining people’s trust and then asked them to send intimate photos.
The group operated from inside the Pelotas Regional Prison, extorting victims in Brazil and abroad.
Of the arrests, 57 were of inmates already in the prison system, and another 28 occurred today (6), 24 in Pelotas and four in Jaguarão, Arroio Grande, São Lourenço and Rio Grande.
The operation also resulted in the seizure of cell phones, chips, credit cards, a notebook, an external HD and a vehicle.
More than 160 court orders were served in several cities in the region, and the bank accounts and properties of those under investigation were frozen.
The investigation revealed that the group carried out around 700 extortions in less than 40 days, targeting victims in Brazil, Germany, Portugal and Jamaica, making a profit of more than R$700,000.
Inside the prison, the criminals also sold and rented cell phones for amounts reaching R$15,000, with part of the profits going to the organization.
