One Federal Police operation blocked assets worth up to R$82 million belonging to the investigated party s, this Tuesday (17). The work was carried out with the support of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat of Paraguay (SENAD).
The Federal Police launched Operation Vagus, dismantling a complex international criminal network responsible for laundering money from drug trafficking and other crimes.
The operation is an offshoot of Operation Fenício II, which investigated financial crimes on the border between Brazil and Uruguay. At that time, the focus was on a company located in Chuí/RS, suspected of receiving large amounts of money from illicit sources, with strong evidence of involvement in money laundering and foreign exchange evasion.
The new phase of the investigation deepened the investigations and identified new members of the criminal organization. The police executed search and seizure warrants, arrest warrants and asset freezes, dismantling a scheme that moved more than R$82 million.
The action, which involves 190 federal police officers and has the support of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat of Paraguay (SENAD), executes 34 search and seizure warrants, six preventive arrest warrants, four temporary arrest warrants, in addition to other precautionary measures, in the cities of Curitiba/PR, São José dos Pinhais/PR, São Paulo/SP, São Caetano do Sul/SP, Natal/RN, Ponta Porã/MS, Chuí/RS, Bagé/RS and Aceguá/RS.
crazy scheme
The investigation revealed a complex scheme, with five autonomous groups operating in several Brazilian cities. The criminals used shadow banks and shell companies to move dirty money, making it difficult to track transactions.
The illicit funds were disguised as coming from legitimate commercial activities, such as supermarkets, mainly in border regions. The money was then sent to currency exchange offices abroad, where it was made available to criminal organizations.
