Operation ‘end to weights’ by Alexis Tsipras

By Niki Zorba

It is not the first time that Alexis Tsipras sets his sights on a “clean” next day in SYRIZA, free from “weights” to consolidate morbid phenomena.

At times, in the last two years, he has repeatedly sent a “signal” that he is “taking his weapon” to clean SYRIZA’s yard from all kinds of weeds and distortions. It turned out all the previous times that, in the end, he hurried slowly.

“No more fun”

This is occasionally blamed on him by friends and acquaintances, interlocutors and “political observers”, with recent findings that his party “swallowed” him. That he proved, in other words, timid in all difficult decisions.

In Koumoundourou, however, fresh air has been blowing for a long time. To be precise, from the removal of Panagiotis Kouroumblis a few weeks ago to the recent turbulent meeting of the SYRIZA Political Council for the future of “Avgi”, his associates “read” the interval as the opening of a new chapter for Alexis Tsipras himself and his party.

The message is transmitted from the same sources that the leader of the official opposition is no longer at a crossroads of decisions, but has chosen a course: “No more jokes, we must move forward and we will move forward, the goal is for Kyriakos Mitsotakis to leave”.

The rally, along with a “handbrake” on the fake and Babel inside SYRIZA, was the main goal (not the only one) for which he called for elections in the middle of the pandemic. It was preceded by the “beheading” of Panagiotis Kouroublis with multiple symbolisms: The same fate will have anyone who brings the party back to an apologetic position, his associates agree that it was one of the messages he sent through the dismissal of Kouroublis. They go one step further in their analysis, adding that this move also had the element of “self-commitment”. Since he showed so much intolerance to the now independent MP about the “murderers” that he addressed to the ND MPs, among other things, and because he created the ground for the mine-laying of Alexis Tsipras himself, he can not back down from any similar behavior shown by an MP. of, no matter how “high” in the preference of the Syriza public no matter where it is located.

Yes, obviously the bell rang for Pavlos Polakis as well.

The dismissals

Among the “weights” that the president of SYRIZA decided to get rid of is the difficult equation of the newspaper of the party “Avgi”. It absorbs, says SYRIZA, a huge amount from the state subsidy, the damage is not collected, and without a “scalpel” the abscess does not clean.

It was decided to indeed enter a scalpel, through the dismissals. In fact, dismissals that, in order not to completely close the daily newspaper of “Avgi”, were unanimously accepted by all members of the Political Council. From the right to the (completely) eunuchs of the president.

In short, after the … deletions (one −for an hour− to be exact), the dismissals follow. Political costs that Mr. Tsipras undertook “unquestionably”, in the sense that “there is no other way, this issue must be resolved”.

The political cost of the “consolidation” of “Avgi”, of course, has an inverse reading. It depends on how you approach it. There is, so to speak, the signaling of SYRIZA’s turn towards “realism”. People should prosper, yes, but numbers should also prosper.

“Let the numbers come out”, as it is attributed as a phrase to Euclid Tsakalotos on the issue of SYRIZA party media.

Animosity

The third “milestone” in the Tsipras operation for clarifications is the multi-talented SYRIZA conference. It has been pending since 2019, it was postponed due to a pandemic, it was initially set for the end of February, inaccurate information was circulated that it will be postponed again due to a pandemic and finally it was announced by Alexis Tsipras last Thursday that glory and honor will take place on March 31.

Given the previous reference to “realism”, it is being checked whether the SYRIZA conference has the conditions to actually take place … glory and honor.

Everyone points out that it must be a conference of extroversion, a victorious trumpet for the party of the official opposition, renewal, enlargement and all these nice essentials. However, it stumbles on a reef: A change in the physiognomy of SYRIZA towards the most central, which is disgustingly rejected by Mr. Tsipras’s leftists (“Umbrella”) and for which recently (Christmas Eve) they “accounted” for a party meeting of Pasokogenes and wider presidents with members of the internal party minority.

The “physiognomy” of the party has been a field of internal party shootings for years (since SYRIZA was in government). The internal eating escalated, of course, with the “opening” of SYRIZA to “allies” and “new members”.

The power game of new, old, party, “guards” of Al. Tsipras and other “demons” are in full force. Mutual suspicion and hostility are among the “whispers” left by the real dimension of the two worlds that exists within SYRIZA.

There are political and ideological differences indeed, but the biggest ones seem to be personal, with other “springs”, and not so political in nature.

The issue is that, in every big or less serious issue where “the whole of SYRIZA” gathers to manage and make decisions, the suspicion and hostility of some from one side to the other can not be hidden even for pretexts.

Given all this, the path to the clarifications that Alexis Tsipras says he wants to make remains difficult. Definitely not unhindered.
