The Federal Police (PF) operation within the scope of the investigation into the murders of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes in Rio de Janeiro and the exclusive survey of the CNN about university professors accused of sexual harassment are among the highlights this Monday (24).

PF carries out operation on murders of Marielle and Anderson Gomes in Rio

This Monday (24th) morning, the Federal Police carried out an operation within the scope of the investigation into the murders of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes in Rio de Janeiro.

The operation is carried out jointly with the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro. According to the PF, a preventive arrest warrant and seven search and seizure warrants were served in the city of Rio and in the metropolitan region.

The institution has not yet given details about the arrest, but reported that the operation, called Élpis, is the first phase of the investigation that investigates the homicides of councilor Marielle and driver Anderson Gomes, in addition to the attempted murder of advisor Fernanda Chaves.

Ukraine fired 17 drones into Crimea, says Russian Defense Ministry

Russia’s Defense Ministry says Ukraine launched 17 drones towards Crimea overnight, referring to attacks on the peninsula, which was illegally annexed by Russian forces in 2014, as a “terrorist attack”.

The ministry said 14 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) “were suppressed through electronic warfare”.

Three of the drones were shot down by Russian air defenses, three crashed on the Crimean peninsula and 11 of the drones landed in the Black Sea, Russia’s Defense Ministry said.

Exclusive: Universities have fired just 6% of professors accused of sexual harassment over the last 10 years

A CNN carried out an exclusive and unprecedented survey on the number of complaints of sexual harassment against professors in Brazilian universities.

The data were obtained through the Access to Information Law and indicate that only 6% of the processes resulted in the dismissal of professors accused of this type of conduct.

The number of complaints is probably undersized, according to experts interviewed by the CNN as many students, especially women, avoid filing formal complaints.

Spain’s centre-right party wins elections, but without an outright majority

There was no absolute majority for any party in Sunday’s elections (23) in Spain. The prospects for building coalitions now remain uncertain.

The center-right Popular Party (PP) won 136 seats, while the far-right Vox was expected to win 33.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s center-left Socialist Party managed to win 122 seats, with help from coalition partners Sumar winning 31 seats.
