The Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration and Resocialization (Seap) and the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) seized 69 cell phones, a kilo of marijuana and 58 “bundles” of cocaine in prison units in Bahia, during Operation Maximum Force, carried out throughout this Wednesday Friday (22).
Actions of this type have been taking place since the beginning of the year and are part of a preventive routine, with the aim of dismantling organized crime and eradicating illicit activities in the Bahian penitentiary system.
According to Seap, the following were seized:
- 69 cell phones
- 1065 g and 180 bundles of marijuana-like substance
- 58 bundles of cocaine-like substance
- 9 knives
- 8 cell phone batteries
- 47 cell phone chargers
- 19 headphones
- 15 USB cables
- 19 cell phone chips
The searches were carried out in eighteen prison units selected for the operation, such as the Salvador Public Prison, the Lemos de Brito Penitentiary and the Ariston Cardoso Regional Prison.
The operation takes place after a wave of violence in the state, involving criminal factions. While the operation was taking place, two men were killed during a confrontation with the Military Police in the Vilas do Atlântico neighborhood, in Lauro de Freitas, Metropolitan Region of Salvador. One of them is identified as the “right-hand man” of the leader of a criminal organization operating in the Calabar neighborhood.
According to a survey carried out by CNN , the number of people killed in clashes with the Bahian Military Police (PM) rose to 22 in the month of November. According to the PM, all of the dead were suspected of involvement in drug trafficking in Bahia.
