Operation seizes more than 5 thousand cell phones in Brazilian prisons

The Ministry of Justice seized 5,380 cell phones in penitentiaries across Brazil. The data was released in the balance of the operation called “Mute” which took place in 107 prison units, coordinated by the National Secretariat for Penal Policies (Senappen).

The sixth phase of the operation in 2024 was carried out from November 20th to 27th and managed to seize 623 cell phones seized in prison cells across Brazil. With the other phases, the total is 5,380.

The main objective of the operation was to seize cell phones used by criminals to coordinate illicit activities within prisons. However, during the action, agents also seized other items, such as:

  • R$ 26 thousand in cash that was in a single cell;
  • Four explosive devices;
  • Three firearms;
  • Various knives and piercing devices;
  • 87 precision scales;
  • Seven kilos of marijuana in a prison unit;
  • Tickets used by criminals to transmit instructions related to illicit activities.

In addition to the objects that were seized, agents also identified closed bars and a tunnel leading out of one of the prisons.

According to Senappen, the operation involved the participation of 3,401 state and federal criminal police officers, who searched 3,263 cells.

“Mute is the largest operation carried out in the context of combating organized crime, due to the number of participating states, number of federal and state criminal police officers involved and state prison units searched,” stated the secretariat.

Senappen project coordinator, Cezar Delmondes, highlights that the actions aim to interrupt the illicit communication of criminals to block the articulation of crimes led or ordered within prisons.

“With each operation, continuous results make it more evident that the operation directly impacts the reduction of CVLI (Intentional Lethal Violent Crimes). This is what we noticed by following the numbers of the participating states that had a drop in CVLI, during and immediately after the operation”, said Delmondes.
